The Kaizer Chiefs Khune circus continues
Why is Itumeleng Khune still listed as the Kaizer Chiefs club captain across several reputable websites around South Africa and the world?
Khune is pursuing a career in football betting
Now a partner at Top Bet, 37-year-old Itumeleng Khune is still determined to continue his career as a player. This is according to SoccerLaduma:
“There have been clubs which have inquired about him though nothing really came up and now his representatives are looking at offering him to clubs which could be looking at signing a top-class, experienced goalkeeper. As I have said, he still wants to play until at least 40 years of age. You know goalkeepers are like fine wine. They mature with age. That’s where he is now,” the Siya source stated.
“He is still training. He has never stopped training and he has never hidden the fact that he would still want to play and now the good thing is that his partnership with Top Bet doesn’t prevent him from continuing with playing if he still wants to play,” said the second insider.
“And at the moment – that’s his wish. He has stated that he would play, at the most, for two more seasons as he feels he still has a lot to contribute to the game. He still loves playing. As a player he hasn’t retired at all,” the second source added.
Itu’s Kaizer Chiefs legacy is cemented
Just to be clear, there’s nothing but respect and admiration for the work Khune did for Chiefs and South Africa during a superb football career. However, enough’s enough and a definitive statement needs to be made. It’s so strange that his name appears on squad lists when his contract expired in June. Foreign outlets don’t know the intricacies, ins and outs and the situation so they just go with what they can find. Fortunately, the Chiefs website doesn’t list Khune as a current member of the squad. It would be nice for them to formally draw a line under the matter though, and thank the man for his stellar service to the club and the league.
The record speaks for itself
Itumeleng Issac Khune was the rare honour of being a one-club man. Famous around the world for his sensational distribution of a football, he’s also displayed superb shot-stopping abilities for club and country down the years. Khune made his PSL debut for Amakhosi against Jomo Cosmos in August 2007. In the 17 years that have elapsed, he has scooped seven major honours with the Glamour Boys, including three Betway Premiership crowns in 2005, 2013 and 2015 and amassed 347 appearances. This guy was also PSL Footballer of the Year in 2013. Say what you will, but Khune is a bona fide Amakhosi legend. He’s also got 91 Bafana caps.
Where should Khune go next, if he continues playing at the highest level?
