Six Orlando Pirates players named in Bafana Bafana squad
Six Orlando Pirates players have been named in Hugo Broos’s 23-man Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.
South Africa faces a trip to Kampala against group leaders Uganda at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Friday, 15 November. Four days later, Bafana will host South Sudan at Cape Town Stadium.
Pirates players to have an impact at Bafana
Bafana needs just a win from the two matches to secure qualification. Broos’ men could have booked their ticket to Morocco last month but they were held 1-1 by Congo Brazzaville away. Bafana could still qualify without winning any of their last two matches should Congo fail to beat Sudan on 14 November.
On Thursday, Broos named a strong team full of experience ahead of the final rounds of qualifiers. A total of six Orlando Pirates were named in the Bafana team. The Buccaneers have been the best local team this season winning 12 matches across all competitions so far.
Thalente Mbatha and Relebohile Mofokeng have impressed ever since they made their debut earlier this year. Bafana will play their final qualifier match in Cape Town on 19 November in what is expected to be a sold-out crowd.
“It will be very special to play our final qualifier of this AFCON campaign at home, in Cape Town. So, we urge the fans to get their tickets and ensure a great atmosphere inside the stadium for the players,” SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan said.
