Accra Sports Stadium’s ‘death trap’ renovation among key works by Sports Ministry

Accra Sports StadiumThe Ministry of Youth and Sports has provided detailed information on renovation projects undertaken at Accra Sports Stadium in response to criticisms by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.Ablakwa had questioned the use of public funds on stadium repairs after CAF withdrew the license for Baba Yara Stadium due to its poor pitch condition. In a statement, the Ministry highlighted the comprehensive repairs carried out at Accra Sports Stadium, which experts had previously labelled a “death trap” due to years of neglect. The Ministry noted that the previous administration, which included Ablakwa, had failed to undertake any significant renovations at the facility between 2009 and 2017, leaving it in a dangerous state.Since 2018, major structural upgrades have been completed, making the stadium safe and functional. The Ministry emphasised that these renovations enabled Accra Sports Stadium to host key events like the 2018 Africa Womens Cup of Nations, the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, and the 2023 African Games football competition.”The work done at Accra Sports Stadium has allowed us to host multiple CAF and FIFA-sanctioned matches, proving that the renovations were both necessary and effective,” the Ministry stated. They concluded by reminding the public that maintaining international-standard facilities is an ongoing process, and further improvements are always in progress.
