Sports Ministry refutes MP Ablakwa’s allegations of wasted funds on sports stadia

Samuel Okudzeto AblakwaThe Ministry of Youth and Sports has strongly refuted claims made by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who accused the Ministry of wasting public funds on stadium renovations.Ablakwas allegations came after CAF withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Stadium due to the poor state of its pitch. In a detailed response, the Ministry provided a comprehensive breakdown of the work completed at the Baba Yara, Accra, and Essipong stadia since 2018.They described Ablakwas comments as misleading, explaining that the pitchs condition was not indicative of the overall renovation efforts.”It is disingenuous for the Hon. MP to suggest that no work has been done,” the Ministry stated, outlining the extensive structural and aesthetic upgrades made to the stadia. They emphasised that these facilities have since hosted numerous high-profile events, including the Africa Womens Cup of Nations, World Cup qualifiers, and AFCON qualifying matches. The Ministry also highlighted the lack of investment in these stadia between 2009 and 2017, during which time they fell into a state of neglect. They reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining Ghanas national stadia at international standards, assuring the public that renovations have been carried out with accountability and transparency.
