Social media reaction to ‘in seine’ Olympics opening ceremony

There is always huge interest in the opening ceremony at the Olympics, and there was certainly plenty to talk about after the torch was lit at the Paris Games on Friday night.

One of the most popular parts of the opening ceremony sees all participating countries have grand introductions, but the Paris Games already went a different route as the various Olympic teams were welcomed on boats cruising down the River Seine in a historic first for a Summer Games.

In between these introductions, there were various performances that ranged from dancing, parkour, singing to an outrageous runway fashion show. There was also a sensational performance from Celine Dion, torrential downpours that soaked the athletes, a song from a man bizarrely painted in blue, a torch handover process that seemed to last an age, and ultimately the entire opening ceremony lasted over four hours.

It was quite cleverly described as an opening ceremony that was simply ‘in seine’ as the use of the River Seine quite literally turned the event into a wild ride.

The #OpeningCeremony    of the #Paris2024    had hits and misses. While I enjoyed some moments, others left me perplexed due to their bizarre, woke, or seemingly occult nature. It’s disconcerting to think we were watching the #OpeningCeremony    with our children.” pic.twitter.com/dZxxYHcRFX
