Fire Service ‘rescues’ young woman from flyover at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange

A young woman named Alima was rescued on Thursday, July 25, by personnel of the Ghana Fire Service from between the piers and deck of the flyover in front of the Odawna market, at the Kwame Nkrumah interchange, where she was found seated.

Channel One News spoke to some witnesses who claimed that they had no idea how the woman got there, with some speculating that she had intended to jump off the flyover.

“She wanted to jump from the top and people begged her not to until the fire service personnel came to her rescue,” a witness said.

Another noted, “A few minutes ago we were here and all of a sudden we saw a lot of people over here. So, we got closer to see what was happening. When I got to the place, I realised that a lady was between these pillars of the overhead. So, people were asking how she got to the place.

“Some were even speculating that she was a witch…So we didn’t know what to do, we called the police, they came and didn’t know what to do. So, we called the fire service, and they rescued the lady.”

The Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One of the GNFS, Daniel Appiah, said “We were at post when two civilians came to us that a lady is stuck at the overpass so we should come and rescue the lady, so we went…We were informed by one of the civilians that there is space that we can pass through to rescue her from the top…Quickly we moved our fire engine to the place…After the rescue, we handed her over to the National Ambulance so they also checked her vitals and after that, they took her to the hospital.”

He also revealed that some materials such as books, pen drives, and mobile phone cases were found where the woman was rescued and believes she might not be the only one residing there.

Advanced CMT at the Circle Ambulance Station, Portia Ofori, narrated to Channel One News that the woman in question revealed to her that she was residing at the overpass with a man and confirmed that she had been discharged from the hospital.

“At first, she wasn’t able to talk so we questioned her, and she was not speaking Twi. We asked her a lot of questions and she wasn’t able to answer so my boss asked me to take her to Ridge so we took her there and when we got there, she wasn’t able to talk …I realised she was hungry so I told her I will buy food for her if she is able to answer three questions.

“I asked how she got there, and she said she was sent there by a man, and I asked her if the man has been sleeping with her and she said yes…So I asked my guys to get her food, she ate everything and later she told me she is not sick. So, we brought her back to the base, gave her some money, and asked her to go.”
