67 CSOs unite against attacks on democracy
…rectify numerous errors, restore public trust
By Gabriel Ewepu
Nigerians are calling for good governance, and 67 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have joined forces to condemn the increasing attacks on civic space and democracy.
In a joint statement, these organizations expressed concern over intimidation, repression, and arrests of civil society leaders, protesters, and journalists.
The CSOs, including Amnesty International Nigeria, BudgIT Foundation, and SERAP, urged the federal government to rectify past errors, address public trust issues, and protect democratic principles.
Recent events, such as the arrest of the Nigerian Labour Congress leader and the siege on SERAP’s offices, have raised alarm.
The government’s response to peaceful protests has resulted in fatalities, unlawful detentions, and treason charges against minors.
The CSOs demanded:
– Immediate halt to harassment of NLC officials
– Unconditional apology for the President’s arrest
– Release of detained peaceful demonstrators
– Compensation for harmed individuals
– Human rights-centered approach to addressing dissent
– Cessation of harassment of civic actors and journalists
– Dialogue with civil society, media, and professional groups
The organizations cautioned that neglecting these responsibilities will exacerbate Nigerians’ struggles and convey a dictatorial image to the international community.
