22 Years on Remand: Twinomugisha Wants to Use His New Found Freedom to Better his Health

After spending 22 years and 4 months in jail, never arraigned before court, Alex Twinomugisha was on Thursday February 24 released from Luzira Prison.

This followed a civil application filed by his lawyers bemoaning the unfairness in the judicial system.

On Thursday, Buganda Road Magistrate Dr. Douglas Singiza set Twinomugisha free considering the long period he spent on remand.

Addressing Journalists after the court sitting, Alex, who looked speechless but happy, said he was amazed by the Court’s decision which gave him back his freedom.

“I am glad that today I came here at civil Division as a free person having spent 22 years and four months in jail. I have voluntarily withdrawn my civil application,” Twinomugisha said.

He revealed that his main challenge is the health complications he is facing although he appears fine physically.

“The first thing after here will be seeking better medical attention in the shortest period possible,” he said when asked about his priorities as a free man.

He added, “I therefore thank the Prisons Authority for having taken good care of me when I was under their custody.”

On whether he has any plans to seek legal redress, Twinomugisha, who seemed to be troubled coping up with the outside environment, told journalists “it’s too early to open up on such.”

His lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima informed Journalists that they are planning on ensuring that their client receives the rehabilitation he deserves as he settles back to his normal life.

“We thank whoever has been able to stand with our client throughout this trying moment upto this stage when he has registered this Victory,” Turyamusiima said.

Twinomugisha was represented by lawyer Turyamusiima alongside Kiryowa Jonathan.

Twinomugisha was arrested in 1999 over murder of a Makerere student and taken to Wandegeya Police Station before being taken to Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court.

He was later remanded to Luzira Prison where he has been as he awaited to be committed to High court, the long wait that took 22 years and 4 months.
