10 Rosettenville shooting suspects appear in court, seven still on the run

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) confirmed that 10 of the suspects involved in the deadly Rosettenville shooting on Monday, 21 February, will appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said eight of the 10 suspects are expected to face charges of murder. While all of them face attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives and possession of hijacked vehicles charges.

“They were part of at least twenty-five suspects who were accosted during a Crime Intelligence led operation where their alleged plans to commit a CIT robbery were intercepted by a multidisciplinary team led by the National CIT Task Team in Moffatview, in the South of Johannesburg,” said Mbambo.

Eight suspects were shot and killed by the police in the Rosettenville shootout.

According to the Hawks, all the police officers and a JMPD member who were wounded in the gunfight are on the road to recovery – correcting previous reports that said a SAPS member was shot and killed.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also retracted an earlier statement that said two police officers were among the suspects.

“No officers are accused of being involved with criminals,” said IPID to TimesLive.
