Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed
Manchester United could be set
to spend this summer after he
missed out on his key target in
January.

Owen

move - Reina coy over United
interest
United have made relatively
modest investments in recent
times in comparison to the likes
of Manchester City and Real
Madrid, but Ferguson said last
summer that top-quality
replacements would be required
when his older players retired.
Gary Neville has now retired and
Edwin van der Sar will follow at
the end of the season, while it
remains to be seen whether Paul
Scholes will play on for next year.
Ferguson has now said he felt
United "had a chance" of adding a
player in January - although he
did not specify his position - and
it appears the club will pursue at
least one signing when the
window reopens.
"Billionaire owners have
introduced a new world that is
turning football on its head," he
told United Review. "For our part,
we cannot afford to sit in an
ivory tower. We have to face the
challenge.
"It is a healthy competition and it
goes without saying that we will
not shirk it and I don't think we
are doing so. Although I let the
transfer window shut without
signing a new player, that is
because we did our homework
some time ago and didn't have to
rush into any emergency buying.
"We had an interest in one
player, and I thought we had a
chance of bringing him in, but the
other parties involved weren't
ready and so we have put it
away until the summer."
The Sunday Mirror reports that
Tottenham winger Gareth Bale is
"at the head of their summer
wanted list", while Liverpool
goalkeeper Pepe Reina and Porto
striker Hulk have also been linked
with United.
