Optical fibers are widely used in the medical field to diagnose and treat a variety of ailments. Because optical fibers can be made very thin and becomes flexible lines that can be used for insertion into blood vessels, lungs and other body parts. Optical fibers have been to allow doctors to find and work inside the body through small incisions with an instrument called an endoscope. An endoscope is a medical instrument made to carry two bundles of optical fibers into a long tube. An optical fiber bundle guides the light in the tissue being examined, while the other fiber optic bundle transmits light reflected by the fabric and produces a detailed image. Endoscopes can be designed to look at specific areas of the human body. For example, doctors can use the fiber to the endoscope to examine the knees, shoulders and other joints.

Arthroscopy (pronounced ahr-kuh-pee-THROS) is a technique to use another medical instrument called an arthroscope. This instrument is straight and cylindrical with a series of lenses and optical fiber bundles come in sizes from 1 / 12 to 1 / 5 inches (2 to 5 mm.) The arthroscope is used to examine a joint in a body, as knee joints, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. This is done through the arthroscope is inserted into the joint in the body through a small incision. A light is transmitted through the use of fiber optics to the end of the arthroscope to illuminate the whole. The use of fiber optics through the arthroscope allows a doctor to thoroughly examine a set for the diagnosis or treatment.

Optical fiber used in the arthroscope can be used to measure body temperature and other
attributes, in addition to being used in surgical procedures. The most commonly treated by arthroscopy is broken knee cartilage. This is when a small incision into the joint to the use of fiber to the arthroscope and a second incision is made to the use of other surgical instruments to remove the cartilage. The main advantage of using optical fiber through arthroscopic surgery is that the operation can be performed through a small incision, which results in the patient experiences less discomfort and healing time is much shorter compared to other methods of surgery.

Apart from the use of endoscopes and arthroscopy, another function widely used fiber in the field of medicine is the ability of optical fibers inserted into blood vessels to provide a fast and accurate analysis of blood chemistry. Doctors have also found the medical use of fiber optics to direct the intense laser light in a wound to stop bleeding or to burn the abnormal tissue. The formation of optical fiber is necessary in the field of medicine. The use of fiber optics through medical science continues to grow rapidly into everyday life to develop new medical devices and advanced to allow doctors to give people a better service.
