The problem of

The building is secure at night, but during the day there are several doors that have to be open. Anyone could walk in. What can you do?

The solution

It is necessary to control access.

What is an Access Control System?

Access Control is an electronic security system that allows or restricts access to specific areas of a building. It not only protects the property against unwanted visitors, but ensure the safety of both property and people inside.

In simple terms, an access control system provides a control input (or output) through designated doors via a control panel and some form of electric locking facility.

An access control system can be as simple or as complicated as you want, but in each case, the solution will always be an easy way for authorized persons throughout the building.

Gateway or access control?

Gateway has been associated with a single door or gate, while access control is more suitable for multiple doors or entry points.

Access control can also incorporate a host of other features that improve other areas of the company.

Access Control / Technology gateway

There are a number of ways in which an authorized user can open a door that is equipped with a system.

PIN code input

The most common unit is the keypad system. This includes a control unit with a series of numbered buttons or a touch sensitive pad, connected to the lock mechanism through a control unit located at the entrance.

Magnetic stripe (also called card reader) Readers

Each entry point has a card reader and the user "hits" of an encoded card similar to a credit card to enter.

This technology is widely used and there are many options for manufacturers.

Proximity Readers

Instead of sliding the card or label, is simply presented to a reader who usually sees the card at a distance of about 100 mm. This is a fast, noncontact method of entry.

Long Range Readers

Proximity readers, long range (about one meter or less) automatically unlock or open a door when the card is detected.

This is particularly suitable for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and requires no action by the cardholder.

Smart Card Readers

For systems that use cards or labels, these cards can also carry additional information that can be used for other building services - - for example, time and attendance functions, integration with payroll systems, management parking and even the vending machine applications.

Biometric readers

Biometric Reader system uses unique human characteristics - such as fingerprints or retinal scans - to clearly identify who are allowed access.

As there are no cards or tags that can be stolen or lost, or open to misuse, such a system significantly increases the level of security.

What about visitors?

You will have to welcome most of those who visit their facilities, so it should be easy for them to let them know they are there.

The three most common means of attracting attention are:

• A set of simple door bell to alert staff about the fact that someone is waiting outside.

• An audio intercom panel which allows visitors to have a direct conversation with a member of its staff and, where appropriate, the door may be launched remotely.

• An audio intercom panel with a camera setup that allows staff to see who wants to enter the building before allowing access.

Once allowed access, visitors may be accompanied at all or issued with a card or PIN number for the duration of your visit.

Things to consider

When planning an access control system, you should consider:

• How many points of entry / exit
• Where are these> is
• Level of security desired
• The movement of personnel throughout the building
• Operating mode
• Building future growth
• Employee turnover
• Disability Access
• Interface with other systems - for example, the fire alarm

As with any security system is convenient to use a company you can trust. Make sure you use an NSI (NACOSS) approved the organization, which will ensure that your system will be designed and installed by professionals.
