More and more, people are developing allergies to the chemicals used in the manufacture of scented products, especially perfumes. Whether you're an allergy sufferer, are close to an allergy sufferer, or spend your days in a highly populated workplace in which perfumes are banned on behalf of allergy sufferers, it's good to have secondary strategies for smelling nice.

The first thing to do if you want to smell good to others is blank your olfactory slate. That is, try to smell like nothing at all by eliminating offensive odors from your person. Avoid pungent foods like garlic and onions and limit your intake of red meat. Brush your teeth regularly, use mouthwash, and chew minty chewing gum when you can't do those things. Use deodorant sprays or sticks every day, and shower thoroughly once or twice a day.

To give your body a natural, fresh scent, eat lots of fresh produce, especially citrus fruits. When metabolized, citrus will actually eliminate unsavory smells and give you a very slight natural citrus scent. Eating foods with cinnamon and cloves will also make you smell nice.

After all this, you still may have an itch to wear perfumes, especially since this means being able to 'change up' your scent in order to smell good for special occasions. For this beauty trick, turn to essential oils. An essential oil is simply an extract of scents found in nature, like mint, lavender, ginger, cinnamon, and many, many more. That an essential oil is an extract means the oil is the actual source of the smell itself, not a cheap imitation created in a laboratory.

Essential oils can be slightly expensive, but they're worth it, not only because they tend to be safe for allergy sufferers, but because you'll only need to use a very small amount, daubed lightly at the pulse points, in order to give the desired effect. Keep in mind, also, that some oils may not be safe due to specified allergies as well as the effects they may have on your health and mood. If you can, test a few different scents before choosing one to use regularly, and know exactly what substances you're applying to your skin by researching or asking your doctor about them.

Remember that once you have chosen a favorite essential oil, you'll also need to purchase a carrier oil -- that is, an unscented natural oil used for dilution purposes -- with which to mix your essential oil before applying it to your skin. If you do not wish to go this far, essential oil-based perfumes can be purchased already prepared, even with complementary scents mixed together for you. If this interests you, many natural, home-made variations can be found on-line at Etsy.com, as well as via sellers in your area.

Smelling good does not have to involve shelling out hundreds of dollars for a good smell -- most popular high-end perfumes are all about marketing anyway. If you're willing to pay a moderate amount, you can smell nicer than a supermodel. The very best part is that your allergy-suffering loved ones and coworkers will be happy to get close to you.
